The Area
Situated on the south west corner of Mallorca some 20 minutes drive from the international airport of Son San Juan is the pretty coastal village of Santa Ponsa. Santa Ponsa is in the district known as Calvia, which is said to be one of the wealthiest principalities/regions in Europe, and boasts some 6 popular tourist resorts, Santa Ponsa, Palma Nova, Magaluf, Paguera, Puerto Portals & Illetas.
Santa Ponsa is a resort of primarily self-catering accommodation with 12 large hotels and 10 smaller family style hotels. The remainder of accommodation in the region comprises of apart-hotels & privately owned apartments or properties. To the westerly part of the town there is the popular Plaza de Los Jardines (Garden Square) where there is free live entertainment offered on a nightly basis during the summer months.
Continuing in this direction you arrive at the coastal district of Costa de la Calma (The calm coast), which is principally
a residential area with only a couple of hotels the remainder mainly being independant villas and
low rise apartment complexes. The area has a very pretty natural small bay/beach called Cala Blanca, and
whilst less commercialised than the neighbouring Santa Ponsa still offers a good selection of shops &
restaurants.
Moving in the opposite direction going back through Santa Ponsa along the coastal
road we arrive at one of the newer areas known as Nova Santa Ponsa (New Santa Ponsa), which is primarily a
residential area with mixture of modern low-rise apartment complexes with swimming pools and luxury detached
villas.
The coastal road then passes the very beautiful viewing point looking out over the small island of Malgrats. The next village arrived at is El Toro, a very thriving and up and coming area centred around the Natural harbour of Port Adriano, and where there is a good range of amenities and facilities. The port is at present undergoing a major expansion which can only increase the popularity of the area still further. Whilst continuing along this road you will pass the Santa Ponsa II golf course, a private members club, and then arrive in the town of Son Ferrer. This is a bustling little town, which is popular with people who live & work on the island on year round basis rather than a holiday destination.
The next port of call is Magaluf, Mallorca's most popular tourist destination for the British traveller, and offering every conceivable form of entertainment for the holiday reveller yet just 5 minutes drive from Santa Ponsa. There is a fabulous Water Park, Poniente Golf Club, Western Water Park, Pirate Adventure Dinner Show, The House of Katmandu Theme Attraction, a beautiful beach and numerous discos, bars, restaurants, etc.
Heading out of Magaluf towards the Southwest the road forks towards two different areas, Sol de Mallorca where the spectacular casino is situated and an urbanisation made up of mostly town house developments and independent villas. The other area is the small coastal village of Cala Vinyas, with 2 hotels and several apartment complexes centred around a very pretty natural beach.
Passing back through Magaluf the next area reached is Torrenova, a headland that
separates Magaluf from the neighbouring Palma Nova, and has a considerable number of hotel & apartment
complexes, but is less than a couple of minutes walk from either of the adjoining resorts.
Dropping down from Torrenova is the more upmarket resort of Palma Nova, a beautiful
coastal resort with promenade bars, cafeterias & restaurants overlooking the fabulous beach. Here can also
be found the Golf Fantasia a 54 hole floodlit mini golf course and a quaint harbour. |
